The Gender Pedal
Gap

In Milton Keynes, fewer women than men cycle regularly — and we want to change that. The Gender Pedal Gap Taskforce, part of Cycling Citizens MK, is working to understand why this imbalance exists and what we can do to make cycling a fair and welcoming choice for everyone.
Our Mission
To increase the number of women in Milton Keynes who regularly cycle — achieving a 50:50 gender balance by 2030.
Purpose
Phase One – Understanding the Gap
Our first step is to listen, learn and research. We aim to:
-
Understand how many women currently cycle in Milton Keynes and how this compares with other genders.
-
Learn from UK and international cities that have successfully increased the number of women cycling.
-
Hear directly from women in Milton Keynes about their experiences, perceptions and barriers to cycling — whether practical, social or safety-related.
-
Raise the profile of cycling locally through stories, events and campaigns that highlight women’s experiences and successes.
Phase Two – Closing the Gap
Once we have built a clear understanding, the taskforce will:
-
Develop and champion interventions to increase the number of women cycling.
-
Continue to promote cycling across Milton Keynes, aligned with Cycling Citizens MK’s wider goals.
-
Support ongoing data collection and evaluation to measure progress towards a gender balance.
Workplace Alliance

Businesses have a vital role to play in creating a city where cycling works for everyone. By joining our Workplace Alliance, employers can help remove barriers to cycling, support staff wellbeing, and show leadership in sustainability.
Members of the alliance share best practice, receive guidance on workplace cycling schemes, and help influence local policy for safer, more accessible routes. Together, we can create workplaces that encourage active travel, reduce congestion and make Milton Keynes a cleaner, fairer city to move through.

Power?
At Cycling Citizens MK, we build power through relationships — finding shared interests in one-to-one conversations with business and community leaders to create a broad alliance for change.
We campaign to make cycling easier, safer and more accessible across Milton Keynes — from tackling the gender pedal gap and improving CMK Redways, to stopping cycle theft and increasing secure bike parking.
Our actions are public, purposeful and powerful. Each campaign is carefully researched, planned and evaluated to win real improvements for people who cycle.
We use the proven Community Organising method developed by Citizens UK and practised locally by Citizens:mk.
